Ginewa: (Web Desk) Saudi Arabia has taken the lead in providing assistance to earthquake victims in Turkey. The United Nations has acknowledged the aid provided by Saudi Arabia to Türkiye.

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has thanked the countries providing immediate assistance to the earthquake-affected people in Türkiye.

OCHA stated that after the earthquake, an appeal was made for aid of one billion dollars, responding to which the countries donated a total of 268.8 million dollars, with Saudi Arabia topping the list of contributors.

Spokesperson, Jens Laerke, confirmed that 27% of the appeal amount was funded, and the largest contributors were Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United States, Kuwait, European Commission, and United Nations Emergency Fund.

He explained that this aid is in response to the appeal for aid from the Turkish government, which was directly affected by the earthquake two months ago, leaving nine million people directly affected, while three million people became left homeless.

He further added that United Nations humanitarian agencies have provided relief to more than 4.1 million people, by providing food and other assistance. However, emergency food relief was provided to 3 million people, while more than 700,000 people received assistance to improve their housing, including tents and relief housing units.

The spokesperson also informed that the health ministry of Türkiye has been provided with 4.6 million vaccine doses, 16 mobile health clinics, medicines, and other medical supplies, as well as assistance for trauma and wound treatment.
