WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Donald Trump will use a maiden prime-time speech to Congress to flesh out his policy agenda Tuesday, promising tougher immigration enforcement and "historic tax reform."
"By finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions of dollars and make our communities safer for everyone," he is expected to say, according to excerpts released by the White House.
"Our economic team is developing historic tax reform that will reduce the tax rate on our companies so they can compete and thrive anywhere," he will also say.
"At the same time, we will provide massive tax relief for the middle class."
He will also call on "Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare" -- referring to his predecessor s landmark healthcare reform, which expanded coverage by to around 20 million people.
Trump is expected to advocate "reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and at the same time provide better healthcare."
The speech is an opportunity for Trump to frame the big bold choices of his administration.
Some 44 percent of Americans think Trump is doing a good job, according to the RealClearPolitics poll average, a historic low for modern presidents after a month in office.
Trump is also likely to use the pomp and tradition-filled occasion to reconnect with blue collar voters, who made his presidency possible.
