Cat survives trapped under train

A cat has survived 1,667 miles trapped under a high-speed train.

It is believed that Polly, a 2-year-old cat from Plymouth, injured her leg while hunting rats in a rail shunting depot and then snuck into a unit under the carriage of the train, reports The Mirror.

The train left Plymouth last Thursday (January 10) and travelled to London Paddington, Swansea, Bristol, Worcester, Oxford, Swansea and Cornwall, totalling 1,667 miles.

Train manager Emily Mahoney-Smith is said to have heard a  meow  noise while stopping in Plymouth and eventually, with the help of the driver, the noise was tracked down and Polly was found in an equipment storage unit.

Mahoney-Smith said: "Her leg was infected but she was very friendly and purred as I made a couple of calls."

Polly, who had been missing from home for three weeks, was fed tuna and placed in a box in the passenger section of the train as it continued to Cornwall.

The RSPCA and on-call vet Matthew Berriman were informed.

Berriman said: "She had a very nasty leg fracture which was easily four or five days old by the time we operated."

Polly s leg was amputated but she is now recovering from her journey.

Her owners Arthur and Louisa Westington were traced through her microchip.

They said: "We thought she d gone for good, she has now seen more of the country than us."
