BKU's security handed over to Frontier Corps

CHARSADDA: Frontier Corps (FC) has taken the responsibility to guard Bacha Khan University (BKU) where militants carried out a terrorist attack last month, killing 21 people including students, faculty and security guards.

BKU administration asked for the services of the security forces in order to provide superior security at the campus. At the same time, as much as eight elite force personnel have been deployed to provide permanent duties at the premises.

Earlier last week, the decision to reopen the university for the students and faculty was taken in a meeting on Friday chaired by Bacha Khan University Vice Chancellor Fazal Raheem Marwat. The meeting was attended by Charsadda District Police Officer (DPO) Suhail Khalid, DSP Raza Mohammad, Director for Administration Dr. Shakeel Khan and other university staff members.
The university was reopened on February 15 precisely 26 days after the terror attack that claimed 21 lives.

During the meeting, the decision to deploy male and female constables was considered. Strict security measures will be arranged. Security forces will be placed around the university and vehicles will be checked before allowing entry into the premises.

Earlier last month, heavy firing and several blasts were heard when four terrorists entered Bacha Khan University in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda town.
“The death toll in the terrorist attack has risen to 21,” said Director Inspector General Mardan Saeed Wazir. Inter-Service Public Relations stated that all four terrorists were killed during the operation carried out by Pakistan Army.

Minister for Health and Information Shaukat Ali Yousafzai stated that 50 to 60 people have been injured that includes students, faculty and the police.
According to witnesses and security in charge of Bacha Khan University, the terrorists used the intense fog as an advantage and entered the premises through the back wall of the building.
Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif arrived at Pakistan Army Corps Headquarters in Peshawar the same day to chair a special security conference. All officials and intelligence men participated in the conference.
Following the attack on BKU, Ministry of Interior ordered the Police and Rangers to increase security to all educational institutions across the country.

A three level security plan following the approval of Senior Superintendant of Police Operations Sajid Kiani was issued for all educational institutes.
High-level security was provided to schools under Security Forces, mid-level security to missionary schools and normal security in government and private schools. Furthermore, it was also directed to elevate the walls and put barbed wires on them, specifically in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Station House Officers (SHOs) were ordered to patrol around educational institutes at the time of their opening and closing. In addition, they were also asked to deploy additional strength of Policemen. The SSP also directed for a crackdown on professional alms seekers keeping in view the security perspective.

At the same time, Charsadda district nazim Fahad Riaz Khan asked the police to ensure foolproof security at schools and universities in the district. According to the district nazim, such attacks should be prevented at all costs and the police should ensure security arrangements are made at all educational institutes.

“All private and government schools must install CCTV cameras, barbed wire on boundary walls, metal detectors and deploy security guards,” he added.
