HAFIZABAD (Dunya News) – At least five people were killed and 27 others injured when a passenger bus plunged into a drain in Punjab’s Hafizabad district on Thursday, according to Rescue 1122.
The accident occurred in the Fatehki area of Pindi Bhattian tehsil as the bus was travelling from Raiwind to Chiniot.
According to rescue officials, overspeeding caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in the accident.
Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation. The injured passengers were provided with first aid at the site, while 13 of them were shifted to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Pindi Bhattian for medical treatment.
With the assistance of the local administration, a crane was used to lift the bus, enabling rescuers to recover the bodies of five victims trapped beneath the vehicle.
Rescue teams continued search operations amid fears that more passengers might be trapped under the wreckage.
The incident comes amid a series of deadly road accidents in the country. Last week, 12 passengers were killed and around two dozen others injured in a head-on collision between a minibus and a passenger coach near Zero Point in Balochistan’s Uthal area on the Quetta-Karachi Highway.
In another incident, 10 people were killed and 44 others injured when a passenger bus overturned after hitting a road divider in the Rojhan tehsil of Punjab’s Rajanpur district on the Indus Highway.
