ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan's newly established Emergency Response Committee held its first meeting at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters to review potential risks, national preparedness and emergency response arrangements for the 2026 monsoon season.

The meeting, convened on the prime minister's directives, was chaired virtually by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal. Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, NDMA Chairman and representatives of relevant federal agencies also attended.

Participants were informed that the NDMA would serve as the committee's secretariat. Officials received a comprehensive briefing on expected weather hazards, flood risks and the country's preparedness strategy for the monsoon season.

The committee emphasized the need for stronger coordination and faster response mechanisms among the federal government, provincial administrations and relevant institutions during the monsoon period. It also approved the inclusion of all provincial chief secretaries as committee members to enhance intergovernmental coordination.

The meeting further reviewed the potential impact of monsoon rains on agricultural production, water reservoirs and critical national infrastructure.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to implementing a coordinated national strategy aimed at protecting lives and property while minimizing losses during the 2026 monsoon season.
