ATTOCK (Dunya News) - A railway employee who sacrificed his life while preventing a suspected suicide bombing near the Punjab-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border has been nominated for Pakistan’s highest civil award.

Muhammad Liaqat Ali was hailed as a national hero after he reportedly intercepted a suspected suicide attacker near a police checkpost in Jand tehsil of Attock district on Monday, averting a major terrorist attack.

According to locals, Liaqat Ali was grazing livestock close to the checkpost when he noticed suspicious activity and confronted the attacker. His timely action reportedly prevented large-scale casualties, though he lost his life during the incident.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to the deceased, saying his sacrifice reflected extraordinary courage and patriotism. She announced that Liaqat Ali would be nominated for the country’s highest civil award in recognition of his bravery and devotion to the nation.

“People like Liaqat Ali are the true heroes of Pakistan,” the chief minister said, adding that he set the highest example of sacrifice by laying down his life for the protection of others.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also praised the courage of the slain railway employee, saying the entire nation saluted his bravery and sacrifice in the fight against terrorism.

Liaqat Ali’s funeral prayers were offered at Police Lines Attock, where senior officials, police personnel and local residents attended in large numbers. A police contingent presented a guard of honour during the funeral ceremony.

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of government support. He announced financial compensation of Rs8 million for the family and said the railway ministry would stand by them.
