KARACHI (Dunya News) – A centuries-old banyan tree in Old Clifton, which had toppled during recent heavy rainfall, has been restored on urgent instructions of Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab.

The tree, standing opposite Old Clifton Park Tower, was badly affected as downpours swept the city. Wahab visited the site immediately after receiving reports and directed the Parks Department to launch emergency restoration measures.

According to officials, the tree was successfully revived owing to timely intervention, allowing its sprawling canopy and aerial roots to be re-stabilised rather than removed altogether.

Speaking at the site, Wahab emphasised that Karachi’s historic trees are integral to the city’s identity and must be safeguarded. He stressed that the fight against environmental change depends on planting more trees while ensuring the protection of those that have already stood for generations.

Old Clifton is home to dozens of ancient banyan trees, many of which were planted during the late 19th century to provide shade and add to the landscape of the then-developing district. In 2019, 68 banyans across Shahrah-e-Iran and Hatim Alvi Road were officially declared protected natural heritage. Campaigns led by architects and students have since extended this protection to trees along Amir Khusro Road.

These trees, locally known as bohr or barh, are recognised for their sweeping aerial roots and ecological value. They have long served as community landmarks and remain central to Karachi’s green identity.
