GILGIT (Dunya News) - The Gilgit-Baltistan government has announced that residents of Talidas in District Ghizer, affected by the recent glacier burst, have been relocated to a tent village, while plans are underway to establish a permanent alternate settlement.

According to the provincial government’s spokesperson, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan visited the affected area, met with the victims, and reviewed relief operations. He directed authorities to urgently restore water supply, electricity, and access roads in the area.

The spokesperson further stated that the shepherd who first raised the alarm about the glacier burst, thereby saving many lives, will be awarded cash and honored at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in a special ceremony. The CM has also ordered that a certificate be presented to him. Similarly, a young rescuer from Ghizer Dain, who had recently carried out exemplary relief work, will also be invited to the CM Secretariat and rewarded.

The government has confirmed that a new village will be established for the displaced residents on a permanent basis, with formal discussions to be held with the Prime Minister regarding federal assistance. Urgent measures will also be taken for the construction of an RCC bridge in Dain.

The spokesperson expressed hope that the federal government will support the province in developing the alternate settlement and RCC bridge. He added that since there is no early warning system in Ghizer, it was the timely information from the shepherd that saved hundreds of lives.
