Fehmida Mirza, Zulfiqar move SHC against denial of symbol
Pakistan
Electoral symbol is significant for election campaign
KARACHI (Dunya News) - Former federal minister Fehmida Mirza and her husband Dr Zulfiqar Mirza have taken their case to the Sindh High Court (SHC) against the Election Commission of Pakistan's decision to bar them from obtaining an electoral symbol.
The counsel filed a petition in the SHC challenging the ECP's decision to deny their clients an electoral symbol.
The petition contended that although the nomination papers of both Fehmida Mirza and Dr Zulfiqar Mirza were accepted on Jan 19, the ECP has failed to allocate an electoral symbol, disregarding a court order.
The petition highlighted the importance of symbol in the electoral process. The lawyer pleaded to court to intervene and direct the ECP to promptly assign an electoral symbol to his clients.
It should be noted that both GDA leaders Fehmida Mirza and Zulfiqar Mirza are vying for Feb 8 polls from National Assembly constituency NA-223. Zulfiqar Mirza is also contesting election from provincial assembly constituencies PS-70, PS-71, and PS-72.
