ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – A pitched battle took place between police and Jamaat-e-Islami activists who gathered at Srinagar Highway on Saturday.

A number of people of the politico-religious party gathered at the highway a day ahead of JI’s protest outside the US Embassy in Islamabad against barbaric attacks by Israel in Gaza and loss of lives.

JI Emir Sirajul Haq had given the protest call and urged the world to stand up and fight for the innocent people in Gaza.

Police resorted to teargas shelling as some of the JI activists pelted law enforcers with stones. Some of the protesters suffered minor injuries in the clash.

The clash took place when the activists turned violent over arrest of JI Islamabad Emir Mian Aslam. As the district administration did not allow the JI to hold a protest at the highway on Sunday, police sprang into action and dismantled the camp the party had set up.

Sirajul Haq's protest call

A day earlier, the Jamaat-e-Islami emir expressed deep concern over the suffering of the people and children in Gaza due to bombings and called the world's response criminally silent.

While addressing a rally at Mansoora, the JI chief criticised the inaction of international organisations like the UN and called on Muslim nations to step up to help Gaza in the face of Israeli aggression. He said the need was to save the dying Muslims in Gaza.

He stressed the importance of providing humanitarian aid and condemned the world for witnessing Israeli atrocities. He also questioned the role of the Security Council and Save the Children organisations.

He also announced protest outside the US Embassy in Islamabad on Oct 29.
