UN designated September 15th as the International Day of Democracy in 2007

LAHORE (Web Desk) - The International Day of Democracy is being observed today (Friday) across the world.

Theme for the day this year is: "Empowering the next generation" and the main focus is on young people’s essential role in advancing democracy.

The day is observed to create awareness about the importance of the democratic system for wellbeing of the people.

Democracy is about people and it is built on inclusion, equal treatment and participation. Democracy is a fundamental building block for peace, sustainable development and human rights.

Every year, on September 15th, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day of Democracy.

This significant day is dedicated to reflecting on the state of democracy worldwide and to promote and uphold the principles that underpin democratic societies.

Democracy is not just a destination; it is an ongoing process that demands active participation from individuals, national governments, the international community, and civil society.

The United Nations, during its General Assembly session in 2007, designated September 15th as the International Day of Democracy.
