Two killed, more than 80 injured in celebratory firing in Karachi on Independence Day

KARACHI (Dunya News) – At least two people were killed and more than 80 sustained injuries due to aerial firing in different parts of the city during the Independence Day celebrations.

According to rescue 1122 sources, firing incidents were reported from various localities of the city, including Lyari, Garden, Landhi, Korangi, Mehmoodabad, New Karachi and Bilal Colony as a result of which more than 80 people suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, a stray bullet killed a woman in the Numaish Chowrangi area.

Jamshed Quarters police said the 25-year-old woman was travelling along with her family on a motorcycle when she sustained injury. She was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where doctors pronounced her dead.

In the other incident, Baghdadi police said a man was asleep on the roof of his house in Lyari’s Aath Chowk area when a stray bullet hit him.

According to a City police statement, six people were taken into custody in Kalakot and Kharadar and five pistols were recovered from their possession.

They were booked on charges of attempted murder, possessing illegal weapons and aerial firing, the statement said.

The rescue said that 24 injured were shifted to Civil Hospital, 29 to Jinnah Hospital and 30 to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

It may be recalled that in order to maintain law and order during the Independence Day celebrations, extra police personnel along with Dolphin Force, special branch and Elite Force were deployed in the city.
