ECP issues non-bailable arrest warrants for PTI chief, Fawad in contempt case

Pakistan

The bench adjourned the hearing till July 25

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for PTI chairman and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry in the contempt case.

The ECP had initiated contempt proceedings against the PTI chief, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry for issuing offensive statements against the electoral body and the chief election commissioner.

A four-member ECP bench headed by member Nisar Durrani issued the arrest warrants after they failed to appear before it despite issuances of summons for several times.

During today’s hearing, Mr Umar’s lawyer informed the bench that his client was unable to appear today due to his appointment with a doctor for medical checkup. At which, the bench directed him to submit an exemption plea, which was filed later.

However, Mr Chaudhry skipped the hearing as his lawyer told that the former minister was currently in Lahore.

After hearing arguments, the bench issued arrest warrants for the PTI chief and Fawad Chaudhry, and adjourned the hearing till July 25.
