LHC stops by-elections in NA-108, 118 constituencies

Justice Shahid Karim has sought reply from ECP, cabinet secretaries

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday stopped by-elections in NA-108 Faisalabad and NA-118 Nankana Sahib.

LHC Justice Shahid Karim issued the ruling on petitions filed by PTI leaders Farrukh Habib and Ijaz Shah. They had made Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) secretary, the cabinet secretary and others respondents in the case.

The petitioners argued that by-election in both constituencies were scheduled to be held on May 28, adding that as per the law they could not be conducted when there are less than 90 days in completion of the National Assembly’s.

They said the Peshawar High Court (PHC) had also postponed elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, pleading the LHC to stop the elections in NA-108 and 118.

The lawyer of the petitioner said the ECP had expressed inability for holding elections in Punjab on one side but it had issued funds for by-polls in the two constituencies on the other side.

Justice Karim has sought reply from the ECP and the cabinet secretary.
