Govt to ask Cambridge to remove controversial chapter from sociology textbook
Pakistan
Tanvir gave the assurance on the floor of the house after senators brought it into his knowledge.
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Federal Education Minister Rana Tanvir has announced that the ministry will write a letter to Cambridge to remove a chapter on "same-sex family" in an O-level sociology textbook for Pakistan.
The minister gave the assurance on the floor of the house after senators Mohsin Aziz and Faisal Saleem Rehman brought the controversial chapter into his knowledge.
The senators had described the content contrary to Islamic and cultural teachings and values of Pakistani society and demanded its removal from the book.
Minister Tanvir assured the senators that the ministry would write to Cambridge to either delete the chapter or “we will not allow such books in Pakistan. The government will also write to the provinces to take necessary measures in this connection,” he added.
About the national curriculum, he said the coalition government had evolved a consensus on a uniform curriculum. "Now, all four provinces are signatories to the new national curriculum," said Tanvir.
He claimed that even the former education minister did not agree to the curriculum introduced by the PTI government.
Several countries, including Hong Kong, which previously were associated with Cambridge, have now opted for Pakistan’s system following reforms, he added.
