Brief profile of PTI nominees for interim Punjab CM post

LAHORE (Web Desk) – Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi has forwarded names of three nominees for the interim CM to Governor Balighur Rehman as process to appoint the caretaker setup has been started after the provincial assembly was dissolved. 

After consultation with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, Mr Elahi has suggested the names of Sardar Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera, Nasir Mahmood Khosa and Naseer Ahmad Khan for the position. However, Mr Khosa, the former chief secretary Punjab, has excused himself from the race. 

Here are the profiles of remaining two nominees;

Sardar Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera 

Sardar Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera, a BPS-22 grade officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service, is currently serving as the cabinet secretary of Pakistan. He joined the civil service in 1985. 

Before joining as cabinet secretary on April 16, 2020, he has served as federal secretary of commerce and textile, information and broadcasting, board of investment, and privatization, since April 2014. 

He earned his MPA degree from Harvard University (1994), MA (Development Economics) from Williams College (1993), BSc (Hons) degree in Economics, specialising in Industry & Trade, from the London School of Economics (1983). He was a fellow of the Centre for Development Economics at Williams College (1992-93) and Edward S. Mason fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (1993-94). He is also an awardee of the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (1992-94).

The Government of Pakistan also recognised Mr Sukhera’s services and conferred upon him the national award of “Hilal-e-Imtiaz” in the field of public service on Aug 14, 2022.

Naseer Ahmad Khan 

Naseer Ahmad Khan, who served as federal health minister under the government of retired Gen Pervez Musharraf in 2022, is among the nominees for the interim CM post .

He also served as Punjab s health minister from 1985 and 1988 and he was also elected as MPA from Narowal. He reportedly has long-standing ties with Gujrat’s Chaudhry family.
