SC gives police a piece of its mind while dismissing ex-constable's plea

Constable Shahid was dismissed in 2017.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday wondered how the police department would function if "dacoits are inducted in the force".

Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial made these remarks while hearing a plea of a former policeman who challenged his dismissal from the force. During the hearing, accused’s counsel argued that a case was registered against his client on a political basis and it was wrapped up after he reached settlement with the other party.

The chief justice remarked that the former constable was wanted for 22 months for his involvement in criminal cases. Justice Ayesha said the police force dismissed Shahid according to its policy and the court could not interfere.

The department alleges that at the time of joining the force in 2011, Shahid concealed information about two cases which were registered against him in Muzaffargarh. The police dismissed him in 2017 after his criminal record was unearthed.
