Polling for by-elections on eight NA, three Punjab Assembly seats begins

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Polling for by-elections on eight National Assembly and three Punjab Assembly seats started on Sunday. The polling started at 8:00am and will continue till 5:00pm without any interval, Dunya News reported.

By-elections are being held in 11 constituencies across the country including six constituencies of Punjab, three of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two constituencies of Sindh.

The constituencies included NA-22 Mardan-III, NA-24 Charsadda-II, NA-31 Peshawar-V, NA-108 Faisalabad-VIII, NA-118 Nankana Sahib -II, NA 157 Multan-IV, NA-237 Malir-II, NA-239 Korangi, Karachi-I. Provincial Assembly constituencies included PP-139, Sheikhupura-V, PP-209, Khanewal VII, and PP- 241 Bahawalnagar V. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan is contesting by elections in seven out of eight constituencies of National Assembly.

The NA seats were vacated after speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had, on July 28, accepted the resignations of PTI MNAs — nine on general seats and two on reserved seats for women.

According to the spokesperson of the Election Commission of Pakistan, there are a total of 2,460,000 male and 2,028,000 female voters in these eleven constituencies. The ECP has established 2,937 polling stations in these constituencies, of which 747 are highly sensitive while 694 have been declared sensitive.

Police, Rangers and Pakistan Army personnel have been deployed for security of the voters. A central control room has also been set up in the Election Commission Secretariat to monitor the by-elections and the Chief Election Commissioner is monitoring the entire election process.
