PM approves establishment of markets along Pak-Afghan, Pak-Iran borders
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday gave approval to set up trade markets along Pakistan’s borders with Afghanistan and Iran.
The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister and was attended by Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Abdul Razzaq Dawood, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan, Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Lieutenant General (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa and other senior civil and military officials.
The meeting considered the establishment of border markets in Pak-Afghan and Pak-Iran border areas. Briefing the participants about the business facilities in the border areas, it was informed that markets would be set up on the borders with these two neighboring countries.
It was informed in the briefing that 12 border markets would be set up on Pak-Afghan border and 6 on Pak-Iran border. The Prime Minister approved the establishment of two border markets in Balochistan and one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a pilot project. These markets will be completed by February 2021.
The meeting also decided to take more effective measures to curb smuggling at the borders. The Prime Minister said that the establishment of these markets would provide an opportunity for trade to the people living in the border areas. Young people in particular will have better business and trade opportunities.
Addressing the meeting, PM Imran Khan said that after the installation of fences on the borders, transportation and trade would be regulated. This will go a long way in preventing trafficking.
The Prime Minister directed that the deployment of relevant staff in the approved corridors and border markets should be completed on priority basis.
