IHC adjourns hearing of Nawaz's petition against sentence in Al-Azizia reference
Registrar office put objections on approver Nasir Butt's miscellaneous petition.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday has adjourned proceedings on petition of ex-prime minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif against his sentence in Al-Azizia reference for two weeks
A two-member bench conducted the hearing during which the registrar office put objections on approver Nasir Butt’s miscellaneous petition regarding submission of evidence.
Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif submitted review petition in Supreme Court (SC) following video scandal of accountability court judge Arshad Malik, who announced verdict on Al-Azizia case against the ex-premier.
The former PML-N president has urged the apex court to listen his stance to fulfill requirements of justice. A free and fair trial is the basic right of the petitioner, he stated.
It is to be mentioned here that that former PM had moved IHC seeking suspension of his sentence in Al-Azizia reference. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman and Kot Lakhpat Jail superintendent were made parties in the plea.
The PML-N supreme leader was sentenced to seven years in prison and was fined Rs1.5 billion and $25 million in the Al-Azizia corruption reference by an accountability court on December 24, 2018.
However, he was acquitted in another reference related to Flagship Investments.
Besides, he was also disqualified from holding any public office for the period of 10 years.The disqualification will go into effect following his release from jail after serving the seven-year sentence.
