National exchequer suffered Rs9bn loss by power companies in 2017-18

Power companies exceeded the heat rate of 6963 BTU per kWh by 12093 BTU per kWh.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The national exchequer suffered a loss of more than Rs9 billion in 2017-18 during power generation by state-owned power companies.

According to the document, during the period 2017-18, three companies started to generate electricity two times more than the fixed limit. Violation of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) laws also increased consumption of furnace oil and gas.

Owing to high heat rate, GENCO-I caused Rs1.76 billion loss, GENCO-II Rs840 million and GENCO-III caused Rs6.96 billion loss to the national exchequer.

It is pertinent to mention that the limit of heat rate by NEPRA is set at 6964 BTU per kWh while the companies generated power at 12093 BTU per kWh.
