LAHORE (Dunya News) – Lahore High Court (IHC) on Monday has summoned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif in treason case on October 8.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi heard the petition against former prime ministers Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Nawaz Sharif and journalist Cyril Almeida.

During the proceedings, defence lawyer Advocate Naseer Bhutta told the court that his client Nawaz was unable to come as people were visiting him for condolences over his wife Begum Kulsoom’s demise.

He requested the judge to resume the case hearing after Kulsoom Nawaz’s chehlum.

Meanwhile, the court also issued non-bailable arrest warrant for Cyril Almeida over his absence.

The journalist’s counsel assured that his client will appear in the next hearing.

Earlier this year, convicted premier Nawaz Sharif’s statement about the Mumbai attacks during an interview with Cyril Almeida sparked a controversy across the country.

A citizen approached the court and filed a plea seeking treason case against Nawaz Sharif, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and the journalist.

She stated that Sharif had tried to defame the institutions while issuing remarks about the Mumbai attacks.

The petitioner also alleged Abbasi of sharing important details of the National Security Council (NSC) meeting, held to discuss the controversial statement, with Nawaz Sharif.
