(WebDesk) - MUHARRAM begins today for Muslims around the globe; it is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is a period of mourning, as Muslims remember the grandson of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) - Imam Hussain A.S. for his greatest sacrifice in the history of mankind for the upright, just and humanity.

Imam Hussain, his family and some of his supporters were massacred in Karbala, Iraq. The Imam was killed in the battle of Karbala on the 10th day of Muharram - known as Ashura Day - by hen tyrant Caliph Yazeed.

To commemorate the unprecedented forgo of Hazrat Imam Hussain, Muslims around the world hold mourning processions, public gatherings, recite poems in praise of his and his friends and loved ones’ exceptional valor and bravery, clerics highlights the great deeds of Imam Hussain and ask his devotees to follow his footsteps for the supremacy of religion and mankind.

As the moon of the holy month sighted, the preparations to commemorate the sacrifice of Imam Hussain are underway.

Black flags which are considered the emblems of resistance and struggle against the unjust and oppressors – are hoisted on the holy buildings, Imam Bargahs and even the roof tops of the devotees. The story of Muharram is told in the traditional renditions during a majlis in which Muslims remember the sacrifice Imam Hussain made for Islam. Arrangements for such public gatherings have been made. Special food and drink stalls have been installed in the passages of the commuters in remeberance of the tragedy of Karbala. Mourning processions are organized. Security around the country has already beefed up to secure the well-being of devotees.
