ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on Monday annulled the appointment of Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Musharraf Rasool Cyan.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, heard the case concerning the proposed privatisation of the national carrier and announced a short verdict.

During the hearing, the CJP remarked that CEO’s educational qualification is MBBS and is not eligible for the post.

“Musharraf has no ability related to aviation. The rules and regulations of PIA were violated while appointing him," remarked the CJP.

The lawyer Naeem Bukhari maintained that the selection committee interviewed eight people and shortlisted three of them.

The name of Musharraf Rasool was later finalized, he added. He requested the court to forward the case to federal government.

“We will decide over the case ourselves. How can a irrelevant person can be appointed CEO? PIA is a national department. Why were such unqualified people appointed in it? How was a person whose name was mentioned in last on the shortlist was appointed CEO,” asked the CJP.

“The committee formed for appointments was not constituted as per rules. FBR chairman Tariq Mehmood Pasha himself said that the candidates were not up to the mark. Why was the appointment made then?” remarked Justice Ijazul Ahsan.

“How was Prime Minister’s Adviser on Aviation Sardar Mehtab Abbasi related to the appointment?” asked the CJP.

“Abbasi did not interfere in the matter, Rasool worked with with him for 20 years. He also remained the CM House for six months and formulated PIA’s restoration plan. He also provided opportunity to government for bailout over the matter,” told Bukhari.

The detailed verdict in the case will be issued later.
