ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The federal government has given the green signal to authorities to shift former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter to prison via helicopter.

NAB Lahore Director General Shahzad Saleem had formally requested bureau chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal that Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz be shifted to Adiala jail from airport via helicopter immediately upon their arrival.

The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by the interior secretary. The participats also reviewed security arrangements pertaining to Nawaz’s arrival in Lahore.

The interim provincial government has been given the task to ensure foolproof security at the Lahore airport. Immigration authorities will hand over the convicts to NAB men.

The decision to present them before the corruption court will be taken in light of security situation. Authorities have also decided to obtain their judicial remand in prison in case any security issue emerges.

Maryam announces return

Nawaz and his daughter would return to Pakistan on July 13 from London where they are tending to the veteran leader’s wife, Kulsoom, who is being treated for cancer and is in a coma after suffering a heart attack last month.

“We will reach Lahore on July 13,” Maryam told reporters.

The interior ministry has placed their names on the Exit Control List, which bars individuals from leaving the country.

Safdar arrested

The former premier s son-in-law was arrested on Sunday. Captain (retired) Safdar, who was given a one-year jail by the corruption court handed himself in, NAB said in a statement.

Earlier in the day Safdar and supporters had driven around the garrison city of Rawalpindi holding impromptu rallies, local television showed.

“After continued raids of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at his houses in Abbotabad, Mansehra and Haripur, Captain Safdar decided to surrender before NAB,” the anti-graft watchdog said.

 Jailed

Nawaz Sharif was on Friday sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison over a corruption ruling linked to his family’s purchase of luxury flats in London.

Nawaz s daughter Maryam, seen as his chosen political heir, was sentenced to seven years in prison and her husband Muhammad Safdar was given a one-year jail term in a ruling many see as a blow to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party before the July 25 election.

The sentence, 10 years in prison and a fine of 8 million pounds, or $10.6 million, came almost a year after Supreme Court removed Nawaz Sharif from office and less than five months after the court barred him from holding office for life.

The case stemmed from the Panama Papers leak that disclosed expensive and undeclared property owned by the Sharif family in London.
