Guilty of violating traffic rules, rickshaw drivers resort to pointing fingers at traffic authorities

(Dunya News) – Rickshaws are one of the cheapest and most convenient ways to travel in the city. However, despite the ease this mode of transport offers, rickshaw drivers often drive without any knowledge of traffic rules, and most of the times, even without a license.
Rickshaws are one of the biggest reasons of traffic jams and road accidents. Many rickshaw drivers complain that traffic wardens say they can’t be issued driving licenses. Regional Transport Authority also seems less active on the issue.
On the other hand, some rickshaw drivers say that they are so engrossed in earning money for their families than getting licenses issued is not their priority.

Speaking to Dunya News, several rickshaw drivers alleged that the traffic police knowingly stop them to slap heavy challans because they have no driving licenses.
“When we ask traffic wardens to issue us a license they plainly refuse,” said one rickshaw driver.
Rickshaw drivers say even if they try to get their licenses issued, there is no one to facilitate the process while the RTA has issued more traffic violation tickets to rickshaw drivers than to any other vehicle operators.
When the authorities at RTA were contacted for their version on the issue, they refused to comment.
