MQM-P unlikely to retain four Senate seats after 10 MPAs quit

Dunya News

MQM-P is the second largest political party in Sindh Assembly with 50 MPAs

KARACHI (Dunya News) - Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) is not likely to retain the four seats in Senate after its Senators are set to resign ahead of the polls in Upper House.

Being the second largest political party in Sindh Assembly with 50 MPAs, MQM-P has four seats in Senate. All four Senators from the party will retire as Senate elections are due on March 3.

However, the four seats in Senate are likely to decrease as 10 MPAs resigned from the party. Eight disgruntled MQM-P lawmakers had joined Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP).

One vexed Irum Azeem Farooqi had left the party while another named Arif Masih joined Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

By omitting these 10 MPAs, MQM-P is left with only 40 lawmakers in Sindh Assembly. Here too, the party has not converged on the four names with Farooq Sattar and Amir Khan holding their separate committee meetings.

If the party doesn’t hold alliance with another party then its two seats on women and technocrat basis could be in danger. MQM-P will contest for all four seats in the elections.

These seats will be vacated after the retirement of Nasreen Jalil, Tahir Mashhadi, Faroqh Naseem and Maulana Tanveer-ul-Haq Thanvi.
