(Dunya News) – Owing to infrastructural developments across the country along with the chopping down of trees in large numbers, dense smog has hit major parts of Pakistan.

While it is hard to breathe air in the smog that has engulfed the country, the air being inhaled is full of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and other extremely harmful gasses.

Although there are numerous other reasons that have caused smog, one of the major causes is the carelessness with which several trees have been axed down in the name of infrastructure. While 1300 trees were culled down for the Canal Road widening project, 120 were chopped down for the widening of the Link Canal Road.

Other than these, the number of trees axed down by the authorities in the name of Orange Line Train and Gulberg Express Way are 650 and 196, respectively.

While Kikar, Lemon, Neem, Mulberry, Jamun and Mango are among the 2900 trees that have been removed over the past two years, the authorities managed to escape blame by planting houseplants in different parts of the city.
