(Dunya News) - Owing to the increase in the percentage of young voters, the outcome of the 2018 General Election is expected to lie in the hands of the youth of Pakistan.

According to Election Commission’s updated statistics, while 44% of the 97 million registered voters are 18 to 35 years old, 29% of the voters are between the ages of 26 and 35.

The report also states that the remaining 15% voters are those who are younger than 25 years of age.

While the majority of young voters are from FATA – 23% of the territory’s total voter population, the ratio of young voters is 18% in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 15% in both Punjab and Balochistan and only 12% in Sindh.

A point of concern in the current situation that demands attention is that while according to the latest census there isn’t much of a difference between the total number of men and that of women, the number of female voters isn’t even the half of the men.

The questions now raised are if the increase in the number of young voters will bring a change to electoral trends, or will the general elections of 2018 be another conventional poll.
