Rabbani sought explanation on ex-army chief's appointment as head of Islamic Military Alliance.

ISLAMABAD (Daily Dunya) - Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani on Monday asked Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Prime Minister s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz to take upper house of parliament in confidence on ex-COAS Raheel Sharif’s appointment as head of Saudi-led Islamic Military Alliance (IMA).

Rabbani sought a detailed explanation on rules and regulations pertaining to appointment of ex-military officer abroad. Khawaja Asif was further asked to explain whether an NoC was issued to former military chief by the federal government and if issued, then give name of the competent authority.

Meanwhile, the Defence Minister has sought time from the Senate Chairman till Wednesday to come up with an explanation.

As per details, the new military coalition would be based in Riyadh to "coordinate and support military operations" against terrorism. 

Some of states listed as joining the new coalition included Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan and several African nations.

General Sharif retired last November, the first Pakistani army chief in more than 20 years not to seek an extension to his term like some previous military leaders.
