Punjab government halted issuance of notification over police reservations.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Punjab government has stopped issuance of notification regarding Civil Administration Ordinance 2016 after police officials refused to work under the deputy commissioners.

According to sources, police officials desire continuation of old system in which they are answerable to heads of the district administration.

Police officials also sense that the new ordinance will curtail their promotion prospects.

Police officials view old system as a direct link between police and locals, thus ultimately amplifying police’ performance.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been apprised regarding their apprehensions. The Chief Minister has summoned consultative meeting today (Monday) after which a final decision would be drawn.

According to the ordinance, deputy commissioners (DCs) would replace the district coordination officers (DCOs) in all the districts of Punjab

DCs will be able to hold court sessions in criminal cases as justice of the peace. Moreover, the performance of the Assistant Commissioner (AC) within the district will be accounted by the respective DC.

The monitoring of all development projects in a district will be ensured by the DC of that district. He will take active measures for the deliverance of best service for all residents.

Other duties will include consultation with police heads to safeguard peace and be responsible for the lives and properties of citizens.

Furthermore in the ordinance, instead of Additional Commissioners, Additional Deputy Commissioners will be appointed. DC will be able to call the leader of local council at any time for inquiry.

To improve the deliverance of service in local government system, DCs will monitor the performance of mayors. Government properties will be regulated by him. A DC will have the duty to determine the statistics of his respective district.
