NIA officer interrogating Pathankot attack shot dead in Uttar Pradesh

NEW DELHI (Web Desk) - A National Investigation Agency (NIA) Officer Mohammad Tanzil who was investigating Pathankot airbase attack was shot dead by two unidentified attackers near his hometown- Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday night.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Tanzil was returning from a function with his wife and a child when attackers opened fire at his car.

The officer succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital while wife is undergoing medical treatment at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

"He was attending his niece’s marriage. He was with his wife and two children. Two bike-borne assailants shot fire at them. They were referred to the Cosmos hospital," Station House Officer Rajkumar told ANI.

In New Delhi, NIA IG Sanjeev Kumar termed it as a “planned attack”.

The slain officer was part the of ongoing Pathankot investigation and was posted in Delhi.

Investigation into the matter is underway to ascertain the exact reason behind the attack.

Earlier, Indian media reported that an Indian investigation team will visit Pakistan to interrogate Pathankot attacks. Pakistani investigation team had visited the attacked area of Pathankot Airbase and had also investigated the suspects SP Gurdaspur, Salwinder Singh, Rajesh Varma and other alleged witnesses.

On the other hand, India blamed Jaish-e-Mohammad for Pathankot attacks. In this regard, India had also presented a resolution in UN declaring Ameer Jaish-e-Mohammad a terrorist which has been vetoed by China.
