Parliamentary parties pledge support to govt for CPEC

Steering committee, comprising of Chief Ministers (CM) formed to monitor the situation

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Political parties on Friday have pledged their support to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif.

The Prime Minister had called a meeting today in the federal capital to address reservations of different parties over CPEC routes.

A steering committee, comprising of all Chief Ministers (CM) has been formed to monitor the progress. The meeting resolved to construct western route of the corridor on priority basis.

According to a notification issued by the PM House after the meeting, construction of the western route would be sped up while the federation would provide funds to purchase pieces of land. 

The meeting chaired by Nawaz Sharif also resolved to have progress in the project reviewed every three months by the CMs. The Prime Minister said that all the economic zones would be built with consensus of the provinces.

PM Nawaz will monitor the project from time to time. Pervez Khattak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister, while talking to the media after the meeting said it is hoped that the province would get its due share.

The Prime Minister vowed to clear all reservations of the political parties. The project would prove to be a game changer for the region and the country.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Awami National Party’s (ANP) Asfand Yar Wali, Pakhtunkhawa Milli Awami Party (PK-MAP) leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Jamaat-e-Islami chief (JI) Siraj-ul-Haq, Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhawa (KP) Pervez Khattak, Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Khanzada Khan, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Ajmal Wazir and Qaumi Watan Party’s (QWP) Aftab Sherpao attended the meeting.

However, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) Khursheed Shah did not attend the meeting. In a talk with Dunya News in the program ‘Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Sath’, the leader of the opposition stated that he was at the Islamabad airport ready to depart for Karachi when he recieved the invite for the meeting from PM House.


Reaction of Politicians


While talking to media after the meeting, Shah Mahmood Qureshi stated that the suggestion to form a committee headed by PM Nawaz was given which has been accepted.

Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Pervez Khattak said that Orange Line Train is also a part of CPEC but it is not our priority.

Siraj-ul-Haq said that they want Punjab to progress however; small provinces should also be given the chance to prosper.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman was of the view that Western route for CPEC was given preference in the meeting.

Ahsan Iqbal affirmed that all the political party leaders have supported and endorsed the CPEC project.

Moreover, Mushahid Hussain Syed of PML-Q and Afrasiab Khattak also termed the meeting as favourable for addressing the reservations over CPEC.
