On December 22, the federal government had restored Rangers authority

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal government, in reply to Sindh government’s letter has stated that provincial governments could be given orders by federation executive authority for security reasons.

Sources privy to the federal government said that federation has made it clear to Sindh that it could be ordered by the federation, given the circumstances.

The federation has further stated that it has several other options to have the constitution implemented. Sources said that the provincial government has been made clear that it does not reserve authority to go against federation’s order.

Sindh government should take into account Article 147 and 149 in addition to the Article 147. Articles 147 and 149 are better suited in the current situation regarding Rangers’ policing powers in Karachi.

The federation has stated that Article 148 holds federal government responsible to protect province from internal and external threats. Article 149 states that a province could use its executive authority if it does not hinder federation’s authority.

The province had extended paramilitary force’s stay in Karachi for two months on condition of approaching the government authority before raiding a public office or making any arrest.

On December 22, the federal government had restored Rangers’ authority in Karachi without any condition. Sindh’s recommendations were discarded by the federation.

On Thursday, Sindh government had written a letter to the federation regarding the issue and termed federation’s move an ‘attack on Sindh’.

Asif Ali Zardari had lashed out at the federation saying that the government has violated supremacy of the constitution.
