LHC rejects plea challenging phase-wise LB polls

The commission does not have enough staff to conduct polls altogether, says ECP

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday has rejected plea that challenged holding of phase wise local body (LB) polls in Punjab.

Justice Ijazul Hassan held hearing of the case in the early hours today however, the verdict was reserved.

The court has supported holding of phase wise LB elections in the province.

During the hearing, Pakistan Justice Party’s leader Munsif Awan said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is holding LB polls in the province phase wise which is a plan for rigging. He said that the elections are going to be held in first phase in constituencies were Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) candidates were victorious.

He requested the LHC to annul holding of elections in phase pattern.

The ECP’s counsel opposed the stance saying that the commission held LB elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) all at once which led to issues. The commission also does not have enough staff to conduct polls all together, he added.
