PEMRA issues notice to 14 TV channels over broadcasting hate speech

Appropriate action should be taken under section 27 of PEMRA act, stated the letter

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued show-cause notices to 14 channels over broadcasting hate speech on Friday. 

Ministry of Information had directed PEMRA to take action against TV channels which broadcasted the hate speech.

Taking notice of Altaf Hussain’s hate speech, Ministry of Information had sent PEMRA a letter in this regard.

The letter cited the government’s displeasure at the broadcast of such a speech. It stated that appropriate action should be taken under section 27 of PEMRA act.

The letter directed TV channels to use a delay device during live telecast of proceedings.

PEMRA stated that action would be taken against TV channels that did not comply with terms in the letter.

The letter also stated that while the government respected the freedom of press but acts amounting to inciting violence in general public would not be tolerated.
