Lawyers across Pakistan protest against Charlie Hebdo cartoons
Lawyers have passed a resolution condemning the provocative material.
KARACHI (Web Desk) – Lawyers across Pakistan are protesting against blasphemous cartoons published by French weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo, Dunya News reported.
Lawyers have boycotted courts on the call of Punjab Bar Council to show displeasure over the sketches. In Lahore, lawyers did not appear in session court, district court and Cantt court. Reportedly, fifteen thousand cases have been postponed due to the strike.
During an emergency meeting in Multan, lawyers passed a resolution condemning the provocative material.
Lawyers are on strike in Karachi as well where they boycotted City Court, Malir Court and other lowers courts, delaying hearings of hundreds of cases.
On the call of Balochistan Bar Association, lawyers have completely boycotted court proceedings across the province. The legal fraternity was of the view that hurting sentiments of more than one billion Muslims represents ‘cheapest mindset’ of so-called French journalists.
Earlier on Friday, at least three people including a photo journalist were injured in clashes between anti-Charlie Hebdo protesters and police outside the French consulate in Karachi.
The protest by the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami religious party was one of several staged across Pakistan by religious parties after Friday prayers against the French magazine s depiction of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
Protesters in the northwest city of Peshawar and central Multan burnt French flags on the streets, while rallies were also held in the capital Islamabad and the eastern city of Lahore.
The newspaper is known for ridiculing religious figures and its defiant post-attack issue released Wednesday again featured the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on its front page. The new cover has sparked anger in parts of the Islamic world, with protests staged from the Philippines and Turkey to Kuwait and Mauritania.
