LHC acquits four death row convicts in Rawalpindi Imambargah attack case
Four prisoners were awarded death sentences by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in 2004.
RAWALPINDI (Web Desk) – The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench on Monday acquitted four death row convicts in Rawalpindi Imambagah attack case, Dunya News reported.
The four prisoners, Habibullah, Fazal Hameed, Tahir and Nasir, were arrested in connection with an attack on Shah-e-Najf Imambagah in Rawalpindi in 2002 in which 11 people died and 19 got injured.
They were sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in 2004.
Later, counsel of the convicts filed an intra-court appeal against the decision in LHC’s Rawalpindi bench.
Justice Ibadur Rehman and Justice Qazi Muhammad Ameen accepted the appeals and ordered immediate release of the accused, observing death sentences were awarded over insufficient evidence.
On December 17, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on death penalty for those convicted for terrorism a day after the deadly attack on Army Public School in Peshawar that left 150 persons including mostly children dead.
So far, seven militants convicted of attacks on the Pakistan Army headquarters and former military ruler Pervez Musharraf have been hanged.
