Pakistan is one of three countries where polio is endemic.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Chief Ministers of the four provinces called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif separately in Islamabad today (Wednesday).

They discussed matters of national interest, including the anti-polio measures.

Later today, the Prime Minister will chair the meeting of National Steering Committee on Eradication of Polio in Islamabad to review measures being taken by the government and other partners to eradicate polio from the country.

Chief Ministers of all four provinces, chief secretaries, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Health Minister and army officials will attend the meeting.

Representatives of UNICEF, World Health Organisation, World Bank and JICA will also attend the meeting.

Polio remains endemic in Pakistan and a total of 220 new cases have so far been reported this year alone. Pakistan has even surpassed its own record of 199 polio cases that came to light in the year 2000.

Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only three countries to report transmission of the poliovirus this year. A total of 12 cases have surfaced from Afghanistan, while Nigeria has only reported six cases during the current year.
