Karachi: 'Intensive' anti-polio campaign underway

KARACHI (Web Desk) – The intensive anti-polio campaign is underway in six towns of Karachi, Dunya News reported on Saturday. 

According to details, the anti-polio drive is being run on emergency basis in 16 union councils of Orangi, Baldia, Sarjani, Guddap, Kemari and Malir town. Approximately 161,000 children will be inoculated against the deadly virus.

Strict security measures are taken to avoid any untoward incident. The polio workers are accompanied by policemen.

According to officials, the campaign couldn’t be started in these vulnerable areas due to several issues. Most of the people in these towns belonged to Waziristan and other areas.

The Sindh government decided to launch intensive anti-polio campaign in Karachi to prevent further spread of polio in the province. Earlier, the Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah also directed the concerned authorities to establish district polio control rooms. He ordered to administer polio drops to every child of internally displaced persons (IDPs) of North Waziristan at entry points of Sindh border.
