Magnitude 7.2 earthquake jolts Sindh, Balochistan, 19 killed

Tremors were felt in different area of Balochistan already devastated by Tuesday's quake.

(Web Desk) - At least 19 people have been reported killed as a major earthquake of 7.2 on the Richter scale jolted different parts of Balochistan and Sindh today (Saturday).

The new tremor struck 96 kilometres (59 miles) northeast of the district of Awaran at a depth of 14km at 1234 (0734 GMT) according to the US Geological Survey.

"It was not an aftershock it was an independent earthquake," Zahid Rafi, director of the National Seismic Centre of Pakistan said.

The areas where tremors were felt included Quetta‚ Khuzdar‚ Awaran‚ Kech‚ Panjgur‚ Jaffarabad‚ Naseerabad‚ Chaghi‚ Dera Allah Yar‚ Dalbandi‚ Kashmore‚ Karachi‚ Larkana and Shahdad Kot.

Awaran, a remote region in the province of Balochistan, was shattered by a 7.7-magnitude quake on Tuesday which left more than 500 dead and over 100,000 people homeless.

An AFP reporter in Awaran said today that hundreds of patients being treated in the aftermath of the previous quake fled a hospital in panic as the new tremor hit.

"We are checking but no reports of losses have yet been received," Jan Mohammad Buledi, spokesman for the provincial government of Balochistan said.

Ninteen people were killed in Awaran and Khuzdar districts of Balochistan.
