Lyari operation: Four killed, 8 hurt during clashes

Four people including a policeman killed, 8 others wounded during clashes in Lyari area of Karachi.

A targeted operation began in the early hours of Friday, in Karachis Lyari area where a heavy contingent of Police and Frontier Constabulary personnel are taking action against criminal elements.Law enforcement personnel faced resistance upon their arrival and blockades were placed at all entry and exit points of the area.The area resounded with the sound of blasts and firing. Businesses and shops remained closed, transport was nowhere to be seen. Residents of the area remained indoors.By the time the contingent reached Cheel Chawk, they were attacked by rockets and hand grenades.Police set up posts at Cheel Chawk whereas criminals atop high rises continued incessant firing using latest weapons.According to details, three people were injured in a grenade attack in Agra Taj and Gul Muhammad. Two people were also injured during shooting incident in Musa Line.Two policemen were wounded during clash in Pak Colony, however, one of them succumbed to injuries.Two suspected members of Lyari gang war were arrested during the operation.The operation is being conducted in Cheel Chowk, Nawalin, Aath Chowk, Phool Bati Lane, Abshani Gali, Lee Market, Lyari Town, Office Kalakot and Chakewara areas, a police official said.In the light of the ongoing unrest, board examinations of class 10 which were re-scheduled for today were postponed again.Heavy contingent of 600 police and FC with 10 armoured personnel carriers (APC), 40 mobile vans are taking part in the operation.
