ICC rejects proposal to split Test cricket into two divisions during Dubai meeting, as discussions also touch on team expansion and tournament formats.
DUBAI (Dunya News) – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has turned down a proposal to divide Test cricket into two tiers.
According to a leading cricket website, the decision was made during the ICC’s meeting in Dubai, where members raised concerns over funding complexities and the potential impact on the traditional format.
Sources suggest that from 2027 onwards, the ICC World Test Championship could include all 12 full member nations. This would mark the first time every full member side participates in the competition, expanding the reach of the game’s longest format and providing greater opportunities for Test-playing nations.
The meeting also reviewed upcoming ICC tournament structures. The 2027 Cricket World Cup will feature 14 teams, restoring the format used in 2015.
Meanwhile, the T20 World Cup will continue with 20 teams, maintaining the current size of the event. Additionally, a proposal to reinstate the One-Day Super League remains under consideration, as the ICC evaluates ways to strengthen bilateral cricket and maintain competitive balance across formats.
