The Indian cricketer posted a photo with his wife which drew criticism from moral police

(Web Desk) – Yet another moral policing incident occurred on social media where self-proclaimed moralists tried to shame Irfan Pathan and his wife for posting an ‘un-Islamic’ photo together.

As soon as the Indian cricketer shared the picture on Facebook and Twitter, there were hard-line comments like “WTF! Tell her to cover her arms being a Muslim and Pathan” and “You’re making others see your wife after running out of jobs. Keep your father’s respect intact”.

Irfan Pathan’s wife Safa Baig, previously a model and Jeddah resident, received flak for showing her bare arms and wearing nail polish. The two were married last year in February.

“No problem. Today just half face. Tomorrow full. Then loose hijab. Then finely loose haya,” said a social media user on the image. Ironically, Baig was already wearing a hijab and covering her face with the hands, however, moral police still found something worth criticism considering the nail polish and arms. “Yes. Can t show hands and nail polish, against religion,” said another.

Such incidents of moral policing are not new in Southeast Asia. Indian pacer Mohammed Shami had to defend his wife when people called her deviating from the ‘right path’. “My wife and daughter are a part of my life and I exactly know what to do and what not to do for them,” he said to the haters.

Bollywood diva Priyanka Chopra hit back at when they tried to shame her over a dress she wore when meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “For so many years women were told to act a certain way, to dress a certain way, to think a certain way, even not to think at all,” she said in an interview.
