Pakistan pays Rs32.2tr interest on debt in five years

Summary Pakistan paid Rs32.239 trillion in interest on public debt during five years, while the country’s total debt reached Rs81.374 trillion by December 2025.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Pakistan paid Rs32.239 trillion in interest on its debt during five years, while the country’s total debt stood at Rs81.374 trillion as of December 2025, the Ministry of Finance informed the Senate on Thursday.

The details of the country’s debt were presented during a Senate session presided over by Manzoor Kakar.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the government’s domestic debt stood at Rs55.363 trillion, while its foreign debt amounted to Rs23.166 trillion by December 2025.

The ministry further informed the upper house that Pakistan had borrowed Rs2.845 trillion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

It said the government paid a cumulative Rs32.239 trillion in interest on debt from 2021 to fiscal year 2026.

During the same period, the government repaid Rs102.780 trillion in debt, according to the figures presented by the Finance Ministry.

The data highlights the scale of Pakistan’s debt obligations and the heavy cost of servicing domestic and external borrowing.
