Punjab govt takes notice of unauthorised increase in transport fares

Summary Punjab govt ordered action against transporters over self-imposed fare hikes after fuel price increase, while transport companies agreed not to raise fares.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Punjab government has taken notice of the unauthorised increase in public transport fares and assigned deputy commissioners and Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) the task of ensuring implementation of official fare decisions.

An agreement has been reached between the transport department and transporters not to increase fares, while several transport operators have expressed willingness to maintain existing rates. The transport department has also obtained affidavits from transporters assuring that fares will not be increased.

Secretary RTA Lahore Rana Mohsin said various private transport companies have submitted written undertakings confirming that fares will remain unchanged. He warned that strict action would be taken against transporters involved in self-imposed fare hikes.

He further said raiding teams have been activated at all bus terminals and strict action will be taken against violations of government directives.

Earlier, following the increase in petroleum product prices, public transporters had raised fares by Rs100 to Rs450 on different routes.

The fare from Lahore to Rawalpindi was increased from Rs3,630 to Rs3,800, while Lahore to Peshawar fare was raised from Rs4,240 to Rs4,460. The Lahore to Sargodha fare increased from Rs1,730 to Rs1,810.

Similarly, the fare from Lahore to Faisalabad was raised from Rs1,580 to Rs1,655, Lahore to Multan from Rs2,890 to Rs3,050, Lahore to Bahawalpur from Rs3,630 to Rs3,800 and Lahore to Ahmadpur from Rs3,710 to Rs3,890.

The Lahore to Swat fare was increased from Rs4,480 to Rs4,700, while the Lahore to Karachi fare went up from Rs9,720 to Rs10,170.
