Punjab to clampdown on sugar hoarders

Confiscated sugar will be sold at a fixed price and the amount will be deposited in the treasury
LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab Foodstuffs (Sugar) Order 2023 has been implemented to control sugar prices and hoarding in the province.
A gazette notification was issued after the approval of the Punjab cabinet. According to the notification, the sugar kept for betting will be confiscated.
Confiscated sugar will be sold at a fixed price and the amount will be deposited in the government treasury and cases in this regard will be registered against the sugar mill owner and dealer involved in dealing speculation, while punishment will be three years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
The Cane Commissioner is also empowered to determine the ex-mill price of sugar and deputy commissioner is empowered to determine the retail price of sugar.
On the other hand, officials of the Punjab government are assigned powers to raid whereas the food department has obtained the records of sugar dealers kept for dealing speculation.
