Summary
Understanding importance of education, locals of the Indias northwestern Pipad village take a unique initiative to keep a government school running by providing the much-needed financial help. Villagers are now paying monthly salaries to the private teachers hired by them. The school was on the verge of closure due to lack of teachers and governmental support.Earlier, school had 400 students and two teaching staff because of which students stopped coming to the schools. Those who could afford shifted their children to the nearby private schools. To improvise school condition, villagers thought of forming a committee that would arrange much needed funds required to maintain the school. Local villagers had formed a committee of 11 members to improve village government school condition. We ourselves approached each household in the village and asked the guardians to send their children to the school again. Somehow, we have managed to collect sum of rupees 80,000 in order to support the school. We did all this before schools reopened. We are providing salaries to 4 private teachers in the school, said Jhumarlal, A Village School Committee Head. Children are now more than happy to study in the school, as there are more teachers imparting education. Now lot of students are studying here. We are taught well now. Earlier I couldnt come here as there were no teachers in the school, said Kiran, a girl studying in the school. Presently there are around 330 students studying the school and total of 7 teachers. Out of these seven teachers, 4 are private teachers hired by the villagers and other three are government teachers.
