A major fire broke out in a market area in eastern Indias West Bengal state on Sunday damaging over 150 open stalls and small shops resulting in the loss of property worth millions of rupees.The incident took place at 3 oclock in the morning in a market in Burnpur town in Asansol district of the province.Four fire vehicles were rushed to the spot and it took more than eight hours to control the situation.Small businessmen had come to the market to earn profit on the occasion of Hindu festival Makar Sankranti but all their goods were engulfed in fire.Tapan Bannerjee, a shopkeeper told mediapersons that they could not recover their loss, as all the important documents were burnt and lost in the fire.We are now left with nothing. Today is the festival of Makar Sankranti so we all businessmen had come to the market with all our goods and money to earn some profit on this festive day, but we have lost every document and goods in this fire.We cannot recover our loss as all our documents have been burnt, he said.
